Thinking of getting some Clincher Veloflex Records for TT'ing but am undecided as to which tubes to use Some people have recommended Latex Tubes but others say that butyl ones are as good and less likely to puncture - anyone got any comments or advice |

Hi Phil - if you compare latex (natural rubber) inner tubes to Butyl, latex inner tubes are supposed to offer the following advantages (although not sure whether you would actually notice it that much):
An improvement in ride comfort.
Lower rolling resistance, helps you go faster by using less energy.
Improved puncture resistance due to the higher elasticity of latex rubber. Latex inner tubes are also more resistant to pinch flats for the same reason.
Lower weight - and its rotational weight on the wheel so its a bonus!
Disadvantages:
Higher cost when compared to Butyl,
Latex inner tubes also lose air faster due to its porosity. If you inflate a tyre with a latex inner tube to 100 psi in the morning and check the tyre pressure the next day it will be down to about 80psi. A Butyl inner tube could be 95psi or better.
I have some Vittoria tubs with latex inners and you definitely have to pump them up before each race - might be a problem if you were planning ot do a 24hour TT |

| Not sure that I would notice for general riding but if you are after a performance edge for racing it's worth a go. When I bought my TT wheels I had some advice from an experienced tt'er suggesting I went for tubs with latex inners rather than butyl - I did but have never ridden a butyl tub to be able to directly compare for you. |

| Doesn't latex perish? |

| I expect it does perish but perhaps its outside the normal life expectancy of an inner tube - especially if you are using it for periodic racing not general riding? Most tyres also suffer and perish even in storage - particularly near fluorescent lighting or ozone sources like fridges etc |

Most of the high end tubs have latex inner tubes.
I had a latex inner tube on my PT wheel and it didn't last long, with no noticeable improvement in ride or speed.
I'm a Veloflex fan, but nothing beats training to make you go faster. |
