I'm not competing this year, but I might come down for a ride around.
Who are the contenders? |

Got a 2006 allez triple set up as below. Sheldon browm says 71.9 inch gear achieved with 52 chain ring to a 19 tooth rear sprocket
Pro mechanics says the same ratio gives a 74 inch gear.
Does crank size have a bearing on this as its required in sheldon Brown calculation.
If so does anybodt know what crank size my bike has.
As for whose in contention for the trophy not me. Went round the couse in over 34 minutes on Sunday using the 52chain ring 19 tooth back cog combination what i thought was a medium gear.
PS. Keeping the bike as have had a 3 month reprieve on redundancy we won a new contract last week.

calculating it from scratch I think the Sheldon's look closer...
700x23 diam = 25.9 GI = 25.9x52/19 = 70.88
700x25 diam = 26.3 GI = 26.3x52/19 = 71.98
700x28 diam = 26.5 GI = 26.5x52/19 = 72.53
Well that's how I understand it anyway |

As Richard alludes to, it's the wheel / tyre circumfrence. Typically a tubular tyre will have a slightly smaller circumfrence than a clincher so you need a slightly larger chainring / sprocket combo to get to the magic 72".
52-19 sounds about right.
It's real hard racing, so don't be put off by a 34! |

| The only sure way to check your gear is to measure the distance travelled for one pedal revolution, for a medium gear this is 18ft 10.1/4 inches. Anything on or under that is ok. |

| Weather looks nice for tomorrow, if a touch nippy. Managed to persuade a mate from work to come along and join up/in as well. He used to do a fair bit but has not touched his bike for 10 years (as evidence he dusted off the Carrera Jeans kit last night) so no excuses for not riding due to lack of early season miles etc etc |

I have a retro Carrera Jeans winter jacket in my wardrobe in stonewash denim effect lycra - fantastically bad taste
Used to see Dennis in some of the carrera bottoms that look like jeans as well.. |

Enjoyed riding the MG today. First race in 8 months - suprisingly enjoyable, although not very fast!
Excellent winning time by Stuey. Richard Birkin was also flying, especially when he came past me for 2 minutes near the line.
Thanks to Derek, Pete and the time keeping team. |

Even I felt like it was going well. Just need to keep the bike underneath me next time.
Running alongside just isn't as fast. |

| I see Gabriel finally made it under 30 mins - well done, the pressure is now to stay there. |
